Sanctuary Horses

Some horses come to Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab for healing, training, and a second chance at adoption. Others come to us for something just as important — a safe place to land for the rest of their lives.

Our Sanctuary Horses are the equines who, for reasons of age, medical needs, or emotional history, are not candidates for adoption. They are the steady elders, the gentle souls, the once‑overlooked horses who now spend their days in peace, comfort, and dignity. Each one has a story, a past that shaped them, and a future we are honored to protect.

Here, they are not “unwanted.” They are permanent residents of our rescue family — cherished, respected, and cared for with the same devotion we give every horse who passes through our gates.

Our Forever Herd reminds us why rescue matters. Every life has value. Every story deserves a soft ending. And every horse, no matter their past, deserves to be safe.

Red — Sanctuary Resident

Red’s story is one of quiet resilience. When she arrived at Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab, we traced her brand back to a recipient mare program, where broodmares are used to carry pregnancies for other horses. When we contacted the program, we learned the truth: mares who can no longer carry a foal are sent to auction. That is how Red — gentle, steady, and deserving of so much more — ended up in the kill pen.

Listed as “heavy bred” and “broke to ride,” she came into our care exhausted but hopeful. Our vet soon confirmed she was not pregnant, and as we began working with her, Red revealed who she truly was: one of the calmest, most grounded horses we’ve ever known. Where most horses would spook, Red simply stands still, takes a breath, and waits. She is thoughtful, patient, and deeply kind.

At roughly 18 years old and about 14 hands, Red is a stout, steady mare with a heart as big as her history. She enjoys quiet rides in the pasture, soft grooming sessions, and the simple comfort of being part of a herd that will never cast her aside again. She is an easy keeper, barefoot, and not on any maintenance — a testament to her hardy nature.

Red will spend the rest of her life here as part of our Forever Herd, safe, loved, and honored. She has carried more than her share of burdens in the past. Now, she carries only peace.

Gypsy — Sanctuary Resident

Gypsy was the very first horse to enter Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab, and in many ways, she set the tone for everything we would become. She came from a kill pen with a vague backstory — said to have been broke to ride and once a child’s show horse — but no one could tell us why she ended up there. That part of her story remains a mystery. What wasn’t a mystery, even on day one, were her soft eyes and introverted spirit. Gypsy is the kind of mare people feel drawn to without knowing why.

She’s gentle, thoughtful, and prefers quiet connection over fuss. She’s never been fond of having her face touched, but she melts into a good neck scratch and has a way of communicating her boundaries with grace. Over time, we began to notice a distinct hitch in her hind end. Despite countless vet evaluations, chiropractic work, and bodywork sessions, the root cause has never been found. Whatever it is, it has left her permanently unsound for riding.

At roughly 20–22 years old, Gypsy is both our most senior resident and our longest-standing one. She has earned her place as the quiet queen of the herd — steady, observant, and deeply respected by the other horses. Gypsy will spend the rest of her life here in sanctuary, surrounded by safety, routine, and the people who have loved her from the very beginning.

She may not be rideable, but she is invaluable. Gypsy is the heart of our Forever Herd — a reminder of why rescue matters and why every horse deserves a soft place to land.
