Some rescues arrive with long histories. Others arrive with none at all. Nina and her babies fell into the second category — three donkeys with no backstory, no explanation, and no one coming for them.

But they had each other. And then they had us.

Nina — The Guarded Mama Who Learned to Trust

When Nina first stepped off the trailer at Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab, she carried herself like a donkey who had learned to be cautious. She wasn’t feral, but she wasn’t sure of people either — a quiet, watchful “wait and see” hung in her eyes.

With time, patience, and gentle consistency, our volunteers slowly earned her trust. She discovered that hands could be kind, voices could be soft, and carrots… well, carrots were worth everything. She would wrap her lips around each one like a hard‑won prize, savoring every bite.

In our care, Nina learned to walk on a lead line (at a donkey’s chosen pace, of course), accept affection, and relax into the safety she’d never known before.

Pip — The Miracle Baby Born in the Kill Pen

Pip’s story is nothing short of miraculous. She was born in the kill pen — tiny, fragile, and fiercely attached to her mama. The fact that she survived long enough to be rescued is something we never take for granted.

From the moment she arrived, Pip was pure joy. Curious, mischievous, and endlessly social, she quickly became a volunteer favorite. She loved snuggles, ear rubs, and exploring the world with the boldness only a baby donkey can muster. Her rough start never dimmed her spirit.

Noelle — The Surprise Blessing

What we didn’t know when Nina and Pip arrived was that Nina had been bred back before rescue. As summer settled in, her belly began to round, and it became clear we were preparing for another little life.

Noelle arrived on a cool morning, all legs, ears, and innocence. She was healthy, bright, and instantly adored — especially by her big sister Pip, who took her role very seriously.

A Forever Home for the Sisters

When a wonderful couple reached out looking for a pair of donkeys to love, we knew exactly who to introduce them to. Pip and Noelle were bonded, inseparable, and thriving together — and the idea of them spending their lives side by side felt like the ending they deserved.

The match was perfect.

Pip and Noelle were adopted together and now live on a small homestead where they are cherished, spoiled, and deeply loved. Watching them leave as a pair warmed every heart at the rescue.

Nina — A Perfect Match for a Patient Heart

And just when we thought Nina’s story couldn’t get any sweeter, the perfect adopter came along — an experienced trainer who was looking for a donkey exactly like Nina. Not feral, not fully tame, but somewhere in that thoughtful middle ground where trust is earned, not assumed. A donkey with a past, a mind of her own, and the potential to blossom with the right kind of guidance.

Nina was everything she’d hoped for.

This adopter understood Nina’s quiet nature, her cautious curiosity, and the slow, steady way she learns to trust. She wanted a donkey she could work with, shape, and build a bond with — and Nina stepped into that role beautifully. Watching Nina load up for her new home, confident and calm, was the perfect final chapter to her rescue journey.

Now, all three donkeys — Pip, Noelle, and Nina — are living their own Happy Tails, each in the home that suits them best, each finally safe, loved, and chosen.
